SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL       { LOKI OF ASGARD

Introduction: The Movies

The Thor movies are centered around the character and superhero, Thor, from Marvel's The Mighty Thor comic series. The movies were produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures. Parts of the storyline and many of the characters are loosely based on Norse gods and mythology. The movies do a great job of basing a story in myth but adding a modern and fresh spin to it! Because this site is presently based on the movies only, this page will just focus on giving an introduction to the various movies that Loki has been in.

Thor

Thor mostly takes place in the realm of Asgard, home to the king and All-father, Odin. He waged war on the realm of Jotunheim many years previous in order to prevent them from taking over Earth and the other eight realms. By defeating Laufey, the leader of the Frost Giants, Odin and his Asgardian warriors were able to bring a long-lasting peace to all of the realms. Odin and his queen, Frigga, have two sons: Thor and Loki. As the first born son of Odin, Thor is confident to the point of being cocky, attention-seeking, impulsive, proud and has a thrill for fighting. Growing up in the shadow of his brother and father, Loki is more reserved and cunning, relying more on intelligence than brute force. Thor's coronation day is interrupted when a handful of Frost Giants invade Asgard in hopes of reclaiming their source of power, the Casket of Ancient Winters. Angry, disappointed and seeking vengeance, Thor decides to invade Jotunheim in order to get answers to how they managed to get into Asgard. He convinces Loki and his friends, Sif, Volstagg, Fandral and Hogun to march into Jotunheim to do just that. What both brothers learn as a consequence of their visit will change their lives forever in different ways.

Thor is banished to Earth by Odin, where he meets the astrophysicists named Jane Foster, Erik Selvig and Jane's intern, Darcy. During his time on Earth with Jane, Thor grows both as a man and a person. Will he be able to reclaim his honor and worthiness of the mighty hammer, Mjolnir, before a growing scheme back in Asgard changes the nine realms forever?

The Avengers

The Avengers focuses mainly on the agency called S.H.I.E.L.D. and their research with the powerful and otherworldly Tesseract. The director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury, visits the research site right as the Tesseract activates and causes a wormhole big enough for Loki to pass through to Earth. He easily tears through more than a dozen S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and uses his mysterious scepter in order to take control of the minds of a handful. Loki escapes with the Tesseract in hand, leaving Nick Fury and Agent Phil Coulson frustrated and at a loss for what to do.

They ultimately decide to call upon a number of individuals that were to be apart of an abandoned project referred to as "The Avengers." Tony Stark (Iron Man), Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Bruce Banner (The Hulk) join Nick Fury, Agent Natasha Romanov (Black Widow) and a number of other S.H.I.E.L.D. staff in order to hunt Loki and the Tesseract down before he is able to bring a war to Earth. Noting his brother's activity on Earth, Thor eventually makes his way to the realm in order to join the resistance to Loki's plans. However, Loki is easily able to outwit and take advantage of the lack of unity between the resistance team. Will they be able to overcome their differences and fight back in time to save their world and those dear to them?

Thor: The Dark World

Thor: The Dark World explains how Odin's father, Bor, goes to war with the dark elf, Malekith and his forces who wish to cover the nine realms in darkness using the power of the Aether. Bor believes he conquers the dark elves and seals the Aether away where no one would ever find it. In present time, Thor works alongside his friends to restore peace to the nine realms after the bridge between them, known as the Bifrost, is restored. The people of Asgard soon become wary of the Convergence happening, when all nine realms temporarily align. Portals between realms become open at random and could be detrimental if utilized to someone's advantage.

The gatekeeper of Asgard, Heimdall, alerts Thor that Jane disappeared from his sight for a while. Thor returns to Earth out of concern and he is reunited with Jane. However, something is wrong. A blast of negative energy emits from Jane's body when the police try to arrest her for trespassing. Not knowing what else to do, Thor brings Jane back to Asgard with him, where they find out the Aether has infiltrated her body. Malekith attacks Asgard shortly after and leaves the glorious realm in shambles.

Thor decides to enlist Loki, now serving time in prison for his antics on Earth, to help him and Jane escape from Asgard before Malekith returned for her...against Odin's direct orders. The unlikely trio make their way to Svartalfheim in hopes of confronting Malekith, releasing the Aether from Jane's body and destroying it before he is able to utilize it. Things are not always as they seem, however. Is Thor in over his head?

What's Next?

The third movie in the Thor series, Thor: Ragnarok, is scheduled for release in July 28, 2017. Not much is currently known about the film because it is still a few years away. Both Tom and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) have been announced to be in the movie, so Loki will be making some sort of appearance. What his role will be and how much screen time he will have, however, is still unknown. I'll add more information as it is released!
